The Special Ed Faculty at BHS includes;
- 1 I M class
- 1 Junior I O class – Yrs 7, 8 & 9
- 1 Senior I O class – Yrs 10, 11 & 12
- Senior Life Skills Support - Yr 11/12
- Learning Assistance for Mainstream Students.
- ESL Support.
I O classes
Each class has a maximum of 10 students and has a permanent School Learning Support Officer. Students in the IO class do sport on Thursday afternoon with the whole school.
Students follow a Life Skills curriculum and in Yrs 11 & 12 may do a TAFE course for students with special needs. All students receive travel training through community access so they can maximise independence skills.
In Yr 12 students prepare for post school options with NDIS.
I M class
The IM class has students IN Yrs 7-10, maximum of 18 students are in the class.
Students study Life Skills English and Maths in the I M class but participate in many mainstream classes for their other subjects. They are supported by a School Learning Support Officer where appropriate.
Senior Students
A combined Yr 11 & 12 class for English Life Skills and Maths Life Skills is available.
Students choose mainstream subjects and can also access TAFE courses.
Learning Assistance
Students with learning difficulties are supported through specific programs and through in class support by Support Teacher Learning or School Learning Support Officers.
The Parent Reading Program and specific phonics programs support students on a one to one basis each week. This program has been running at Belmont High for more that 48 years
Students with English as a second language background other than English are supported by an ESL teacher.
